Inter midfielder Nicolo Barella’s poor form The price of being indispensable for club and country, Italian media suggest

Inter midfielder Nicolo Barella hasn’t shown his best form in recent weeks, and that’s a consequence of his indispensability for both the Nerazzurri and the Italian national team.

This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, which suggests the number of important matches the 25-year-old has played is starting to take its toll.

Barella was among the Azzurri players who lost 1-0 to North Macedonia, which saw them miss out on qualifying for the World Cup for the second tournament in a row.

The midfielder hasn’t been at his best in many of the Nerazzurri’s recent games either, where his usual energy hasn’t quite been there to give the team a much-needed spark in the middle of the pitch.

That’s not entirely surprising, as Barella has started in the vast majority of Inter and Italy matches this season, and has rarely had a break to catch his breath.

The former Cagliari man showed just how important he can be to his team with the role he played in winning the Scudetto with his club and then the Euros with his national team last summer.

However, this has had the effect of making him a player the Nerazzurri and Azzurri rely heavily on, and the resulting fatigue is starting to show in his performance.
