Thanks to the program, the company has a net positive environmental impact
EAST BRUNSWICK, NJ, April 20, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — Three thousand new trees will take root in from montana Flathead National Forest, thanks to a recent initiative by DK Solutions, a leader in direct mail.
The direct mail company announced its inaugural effort to plant trees representing about three times the amount of paper the company uses each year.
“Sustainability is important for the future of our planet – as well as our business,” said Liran Kapoano, Co-Founder and COO, DK Solutions. “Our company only targets the most responsive prospects, so reducing the number of printed mailers – and by extension cutting down trees – was in the company’s DNA from its earliest days.”
According to Kapoano, more than 15 billion trees are felled each year to create paper. As a direct mail marketing company, he said he felt responsible for replacing minimally what was cut to deal with the paper needed to create successful campaigns.
“Recently, I had to chop down trees that were leaning against my house and seeing what it looked like didn’t feel so good to me,” Kapoano said, adding that he had visited many national forests in United States and nature reserves around the world. Coincidentally, one of those national forests was Flathead.
Thanks to this effort, Kapoano said DK Solutions now has a net positive impact on the environment. This means that the company gives back more to the planet than it takes out of it, which has an overall positive impact on the environment.
“Planting a tree for every tree we use brings us back to a standstill, but for us, just going back to where we started didn’t seem like the right decision either,” Kapoano said.
To decide how many trees to plant, Kapoano calculated the approximate amount of DK Solutions paper campaigns used between 2015 and 2021. Taking into account the card stock, the size of the mailing and the number of mailings printed, Kapoano measured this number against the number of trees. it would take to produce this paper. He arrived at an approximate total tree usage of 1,000. Then he multiplied that number by three.
“We like numbers, and I wanted to be sure that the number of trees we were planting would be accurate,” Kapoano says. “I also didn’t want to go back to zero – we’re not the only company cutting down trees after all.”
Kapoano said DK Solutions has partnered with One Tree Planted, a 501(c)(3) environmental nonprofit known for its global reforestation efforts, to carry out this initiative.
“One Tree Planted monitors trees planted and reports to us on their impact, which was meaningful to us, in much the same way that we track our own results for our clients,” Kapoano said. “Nor did we want to simply plant trees that would themselves be felled for paper or lumber. So we focused on national forests and parks, which we know will remain intact for future generations. “
Going forward, Kapoano said the company intends to convert this initiative into an annual contribution, replacing three trees for every tree the company uses each year.
